To kick off our month of music on Purple TV, we have invited Brooklyn-based musician Oneohtrix Point Never, akaDANIEL LOPATIN, to curate this months TV Takeover. Lopatin is the creator of experimental music, transcending synth soundscapes into space with the occasional bits of drone and silence. He doesn’t conform to the minimalist music of today. Never compromising, his albums, R Plus Seven (2013) released on Warp and Replica (2011) released on his own labelSoftware, each showcase Lopatin’s expanding artistic vision.
His visuals that accompany his ‘cyberdrone’ sounds are just as uncompromising, tapping visual artist and filmmaker JON RAFMAN to create a video that presents the disturbing world of internet subcultures for the single Still (Betamale) and working with frequent contributor artist NATE BOYCE to create digital universes to compliment his music on stage. In 2011 he published his own zine Cool Drool, with written and visual features from JON RAFMAN, CORY ARCANGEL,MEGAZORD, LAUREL HALO and more. Last year saw him work with BRIAN REITZELL to create the score for SOFIA COPPOLA‘s The Bling Ring. And now fresh from opening the Nine Inch Nails North American tour, Lopatin will select a series of 7 videos for our August TV Takeover. Photo Timothy Saccenti

“Blixa Bargeld founded the German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, who for the uninitiated, focused on dark and grinding sounds made from instruments fashioned out of junk metal etc, so this video of him cooking risotto flies in the face of everything. But it also makes perfect sense.” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“The legendary scene from Vampire’s Kiss, which is not only a great film about vampires, but one of the best films about New York where I live currently. And probably Nicholas Cage’s greatest moment on film. I like to think of this as what you would get if Bill Hicks and Larry David tried to write together.” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“Here is the brilliant composer Olivier Messiaen speaking (indirectly) on a subject very important to me; biomorphism. He is accompanied by Yvonne Loriod on piano.” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“This is more my taste than anything they did on Tresor but that stuff is good too. Check out this video with a skeleton in a variety of macro-terrestrial scenarios.” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“My best friend Shaun’s favorite Ministry track. There’s lots of amazing sonic detail happening on this track that is lost in the video, but this is fashion magazine after all so just absorb the stylistic insanity going on here. And get ‘The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste’ and listen to it on headphones.” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“Here’s one of my favorite clips from artist Nate Boyce’s live video work for the R Plus Seven Tour. Cryptic overtures to Alice In Chains’ ‘Angry Chair?'” – Oneohtrix Point Never

“I first got the idea for Oneohtrix Point Never at the dentist. He always had soft rock radio on, which blended with the sounds of metal grinding on teeth in a way that formally suggested to me a complete ideology of music that I have lived by since. The same contrast happens a lot in bullet hell games such as this one. I play this a lot on my ipad, especially on tour.” – Oneohtrix Point Never
