On Mondays the Park of VERSAILLES is closed to the public, except for KARL LAGERFELD who was authorized to walk alone through the deserted park. The designer captured the grave, funereal atmosphere of this expansive symbol of the absolute monarchy personified by King Louis XIV. Lagerfeld’s pictures, like memento mori, heighten the elegant obscurity of time’s passing, and reveal Versailles to be seemingly less the memorial of French monarchy than its mausoleum.
