Maison Louis Carré designed by Alvar Aalto

This masterpiece of Scandinavian architectural modernism is Alvar Aalto’s only surviving house in France. “I tell you, it’s easier to build a grand opera or a city center than to build a personal house,” said Aalto, who obsessively designed every element in and around the house, from the terraced landscaping to the lighting, fixtures, and furniture. Located in the French countryside, Maison Louis Carré is a rare example of the mid-century modern movement, which found its ideal geography in the secluded hills of Los Angeles, with houses by European architects like Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler.
