Since the Coen brothers’ success with The Big Lebowski, the bowling alley has become a popular part of Los Angeles youth culture. the Highland Park Bowl is the oldest in LA. Opened in 1927 during Prohibition, it still has the same hardwood alleys, vintage balls, and dim lighting of a gangster’s hangout. Its good pizza and drinks now attract those who can’t afford the prices in Silver Lake and Echo Park and are now colonizing and breathing character and life into a remote historic neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles.
