hidden place, tokyo
photography by CHIKASHI SUZUKI and IPPEI YUME
You could almost miss the discreet wooden door to Fukumirai, a Japanese restaurant hidden away near Tokyo’s Ebisu station. It’s run by a young couple, chef Honda behind a wooden bar stacked high with ripe produce and Nori out front serving the sake and greeting the guests. Each dish is as seductive as an ikebana flower arrangement, served on unique ceramic dishes. Huge fresh oysters, seasonal vegetables like blanched giant asparagus, grilled Omi beef, artfully chosen sashimi, and exquisite, sophisticated sakes are served in an atmosphere of Japanese simplicity.
