purple cinema (part 21)

purple cinema

Cinema is the soul of Purple. Chris Marker’s masterpiece Sans Soleil (1983) inspired us to start the magazine. The symbol of the French Nouvelle Vague, Jean-Luc Godard, thought that cinema as an art form was coming to an end, and he produced Histoire(s) du Cinéma from 1989 to 1998 to narrate its spectral death. For us, it was exactly the opposite: the ’90s were an exciting period for independent filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant, Harmony Korine, and Gaspar Noé. And still today, in the Netflix and HBO era, cinema continues to evolve, with unexpected films being made by artists like Philippe Parreno, Steve McQueen, and Anders Edström.

Here we celebrate directors who are emblematic of a cinema that is constantly reinventing itself.
