ARIANA PAPADEMETROPOULOS

THE LA-BASED ARTIST’S CINEMATIC IMAGINATION PUSHES THE POSSIBILITIES OF PAINTING IN HER OPALESCENT FANTASY INTERIORS, ANTHROPOMORPHIZED OBJECTS, AND DOUBLE IMAGES.

“I think that until the recent history of painting, men focused on portraying the seen world. Spiritualist female painters like Hilma af Klint and Agnes Pelton at the turn of century were the first to use the medium to portray a hidden world, the interior world, and alternate dimensions. This lineage continued into the female Surrealist movement, with such painters as Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, and Remedios Varo, whose Surrealism was rooted in magic, esoteric knowledge, and inward introspection.”
