Yan Pei-Ming‘s large format paintings combine personal and collective memories to create a new version of history. For his solo exhibition with Chelsea’ David Zwirner, Ming uses Francisco Goya‘s Black Paintings as the starting point to explore a new form of painted collage by abstracting the content and appropriating an existing narrative into a contemporary context. The artist works with a monochrome color palette which enhances the emotional tenor of the images through layers of of aggressive paint. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
