The late Robert Heinecken‘s Copywork questions the meaning of photography by approaching the medium through its formal elements and deconstructing existing imagery. Heinecken‘s humorous assemblages pull heavily from popular culture. The figures, poses and content resonate with viewers who can connect the dots between the ideas and forms even outside of their usual context. In many ways, these works (mostly from the 1960s and 70s), set the stage for the later Pictures Generation including Richard Prince and Sherrie Levine who borrowed extensively from existing images. On view through December 22nd 2011 at the Friedrich Petzel Gallery, 535 West 22nd Street, New York. Text and photo Juliana Balestin
