Henry Miller Asleep and Awake (1975)

Henry Miller Asleep and Awake (1975) by Tom Schiller

In remembrance of one of literature’s great provocateurs Henry Miller who died 34 years ago on June 7th, Purple looks back at one our favorite moments caught on camera, Henry Miller Asleep and Awake documented in 1975. What we learn is vast, from writing, sex, and spirituality, to New York. Miller, 81 years of age at the time, speaks openly in his bathroom, a shrine covered with photos and drawings, philosophers, writers, painters, and friends such as Blaise Cendrars, Hermann Hesse, and Jun’ichirō Tanizaki. The unique and prolific life of a singular American artist are beautifully captured in this intimate documentary.
