Ashley Bickerton’s Nocturnes is a twisted and darkly humorous departure from previously more wholesome bodies of work. The content and colors of the artist’s latest Lehman Maupin solo exhibition come across as a combination of Kenny Scharf and David LaChapelle meets the arts and crafts movement. The overweight blue man featured throughout several works, functions as a grotesque sexual tourist in Bickerton’s seedy world which explores human’s conflicting feelings of repulsion and attraction.
Nocturnes by Ashley Bickerton is on view until June 25 at the Lehman Maupin Gallery, 540 West 26th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
