What We Leave Behind: recordings from Jean-Luc Godard’s archives

What We Leave Behind: recordings from Jean-Luc Godard’s archives by Stephan Crasneanscki

“What We Leave Behind” is a sound piece composed solely of unreleased fragments of sound that were recorded on the film sets of Jean-Luc Godard, and never saw the light of day.
The sound composition shows us the very real and somewhat forgotten audiovisual archive of the film director, rediscovered by accident somewhere in France.
A portrait of contemporary cinema and a reflection on the archive as a recurrent idea in philosophical and artistic thought. In addition to the principles of preservation and conservation, the archive relies on a constellation of ideas of identity, traceability, temporality, space, memory, existence, materiality and historicity. All these questions inspire artists working in different media to manipulate, mix, index, saved from oblivion, and take over archives—audio, visual, filmed, written—or even invent them.
