In collaboration with curator Benjamin Godsill, artist Banks Violette presents a site specific installation in a 14th Century deconsecrated church as part of Il Giardino dei Lauri and the Museo Civico Diocesano di S.M. dei Servi’s ongoing artist projects. Superficially, Violette seems a natural choice for the space as religious themes resonate with previous bodies of work by the artist including his 2005 Whitney Museum of American Art solo show. For this exhibition, Violette presents a series of monochromatic neons whose visible structures and wires enhance the artificial spectacle of his work. Within the church, the forms both resist their environment and work within its parameters. As Violette considers the historical site, he appropriates exhausted Minimalist forms and reactivates their meaning to create a theatrical practice within this new context. Previous exhibitions at Il Giardino dei Lauri include Aaron Young and Jonathan Meese. Text Juliana Balestin
Banks Violette is on view until August 21 at Il Giardino dei Lauri: Museo Civico Diocesano di S.M. dei Servi, Citta della Pieve, Italy.
