An exclusive excerpt from Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art by James Crump

Purple TV presents an exclusive excerpt from the art documentary film Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art directed by curator and art historian James Crump. Troublemakers unearths the history of land art in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. The film features a cadre of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest. Troublemakers such as Michael Heizer, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, Vito Acconci, Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, and Gianfranco Gorgoni were the iconoclasts who changed the landscape of art forever. The film screens tomorrow at the Portland Museum of Art.
