Showing tonight at the MK2 Quai-de-Loire in Paris is Sean S. Baker’s latest film Tangerine. Shot entirely on the iPhone 5s Tangerine seeks to break with Hollywood conventions. More importantly the film represents a leap for transgender people on film. The story focuses on trans woman sex worker Sin-Dee Rella, who has just finished a twenty-eight day prison sentence. Set on Christmas Eve in Tinseltown Sin-Dee learns from best friend and fellow trans sex worker Alexandra that her boyfriend and pimp Chester (played by James Ransone) has been cheating on her with a white cisgender woman, Dinah. Outraged Sin-Dee goes search for Chester and Dinah. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity.
