Kara Walker’s new show, at Sikkema Jenkins & Co., is an audacious dive into the surreal and visceral. Breaking from her signature stark monochromatic silhouettes, Walker’s collages bloom with fluid strokes of watercolor and ink, unfolding like fever dreams of history and myth. Figures dissolve into overlapping limbs, conjuring an abstract dance of freedom and struggle.
Walker dissects the myths of American freedom and progress, revealing the sacrifices hidden beneath them and playing with satire and beauty to confront deeply rooted narratives. Through this, her art unveils the complexities of history, identity, and power in bold, intense ways.
