Kali malone released her new album “Burning Song”

For American composer and organist Kali Malone, burning is a form of transformation and transcendence. Her newest album, Burning Song, is a series of slowly unfolding compositions exploring harmony, transformation, and the emotional power of sound.

Recorded at Leipzig’s historic Thomaskirche, the album confronted Malone with the daunting challenge of playing contemporary compositions for the first time above the resting body of Johann Sebastian Bach. By placing 20 microphones throughout the room and close to the instruments, she captured the sound as it filled this sanctuary for the history of music.

Alongside her usual sidekicks, Lucy Railton on cello and her husband, Stephen O’Malley, on bowed acoustic guitar, Malone shifts towards a more intuitive and emotionally driven approach to music. This form of abstract, meditative music draws the listener into inner landscapes, a space in which to reflect on one’s own feelings.
