In his first solo exhibition at Suzanne Tarasieve’s gallery, Jürgen Klauke investigates the human body by distorting its shape. “Phantomempfindung / Sensation fantôme” is dedicated to the artist’s photographs and drawings, since the 70’s until today.
Klauke works a lot with self-portraits, using himself as an object of study. He makes us confuse our perceptions of the body with clothes or make up, exploring the question of gender identity. Klauke plays with physical expressions as if he was hiding his inner self behind a mask. By showing a nude or a disguised body, seen from the frontside or backside, right side up or upside down, the artist prevents unconscious judgment. Even by twisting the body, Jürgen Klauke expresses a very deep reflection on authenticity, freed from fashion and artistic trends.
On view until June 17th, 2018 at Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, 7 Rue Pastourelle, Paris.
