Joel Sternfeld’s photographs investigate the formal aspects of a composition through a humorous approach to his socio-political subject matter. The body of work featured in First Pictures at Luhring Augustine dates from 1971 to 1980 and captures the in between moments of everyday life which are often overlooked. The honesty of his subjects and forward thinking use of color transforms Sternfeld’s work into something emotional and strangely iconic. On view through Febraury 4th 2012 at Luhring Augustine, 531 West 24th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
