Altamont 1969, a portrait of Robert Smithson by Los Angeles artist Sam Durant. The work is featured in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibition The Smithson Effect in the home state of Smithson’s iconic earthwork, Spiral Jetty. The show aims to bring together over twenty international artists whose work reflects the impact of Smithson in form and idea. Durant’s portrait places Smithson as representative of the lost promises of Sixties counterculture and artistic ideals. Text Juliana Balestin
The Smithson Effect is on view until July 3 at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Marcia and John Price Museum Building, 410 South Campus Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
