The American artist Andrea Zittel explores patterns and set systems as they connect to human psychology, for her latest show entitled Pattern of Habit. The consequences are revealed in a set of grids and linked forms installed through out the gallery which serve to deconstruct society’s belief in schedules and rules. One of her smallest scale works, a fabric piece, demonstrates the exhibition’s thesis. The rules of crochet require certain permissions in order to proceed and to undermine these rules would result in chaos. Zittel’s finished work obeys its allowed pattern while each crocheted square invariably is unique. Photo courtesy the artist and Sprüth Magers Berlin London and text Juliana Balestin
Pattern of Habit by Andrea Zittel is on view through September 10 at Sprüth Magers, Oranienburger Straße 18, Berlin.
