Mat Collishaw’s sixth solo exhibition at Chelsea’s Tanya Bonakdar is visually seductive and thematically compelling as it blurs the boundaries between the sacred and profane. Referencing 17th century still life, The Last Meal on Death Row, Texas series feels somber and heavy handed although formally restrained. In the second gallery, glass encased flowers arranged in aisles create provocative objects of sacred devotion in the dimly lit gallery. Vitacide is on view through February 18th 2012 at Tanya Bonakdar, 521 West 21st Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
