NUDES / Avec by Maxim Northover

In the run-up to their forthcoming concert at Espace B in Paris on June 13th Purple TV presents the new music video from NUDES, a Hackney based duo that stitch electronics into indie and RnB inspired melodies. Taken from their forthcoming debut EP on Zappruder Records, “Avec” tells the story of a ceremonial journey, a rite of passage from one realm to another.

When wearing the beads the bear, a spirit animal, carries out a series of sequential rituals. The moon cycle imagery is a description of compressed time, across which the bear repeats these rituals. The video itself took the length of an entire lunar phase to complete. The “fire” (hozuki – variety of physalis) once buried becomes an obelisk; which at night brings forth a vision of the bear’s mentor, a deer-like figure, and transports the bear to a forest. The following day a bundle of cedar collected in the forest remains and becomes part of a further ceremony. The bear’s main desire is to have some greenery, some life in his peaceful but deserted Zen garden. The Japanese Acer leaf represents hope of re-growth and regeneration.
