[October 10 2012]
Valerie Hegarty merges the surreal and the sublime in her new solo exhibition at Nicelle Beauchene. The subjects of her small and medium format paintings emerge from the canvases and spill into space with their seductive and unexpected materials. Hegarty upends traditional still lifes and portraits by adding elements of lust, sexuality and destruction. The exhibition’s appeal and visual assault is undeniable and pulls the viewer into each image for a closer look. Figures, Flowers, Fruit is on view through October 21st 2012 at Nicelle Beauchene, 21 Orchard Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
