Tokyo Painting Chronicles is a flirtatious, heady mix of Apolonia Sokol’s radical intimacy and Matthias Garcia’s dreamy, aquatic surrealism. Born from a month-long residency at Swamp Edge in Tokyo’s tranquil depths, this one-day exhibition buzzes with the energy of two artists riffing off each other free-flowingly. Sokol’s Renaissance-inspired portraits wink at art history while Garcia’s glowing, liminal worlds feel like a trip inside a mermaid’s daydream. Together, their styles intertwine in a perfectly messy duet—part care, part rebellion. It’s a love letter to collaboration, Tokyo’s magic, and painting itself, proving that art is best when it’s bold, weird, and a little chaotic.
