The Royan Sketchbooks reveals a Picasso in flux—restless, resourceful, and deeply engaged with the act of drawing. Forced from Paris by war, he found himself in the quiet coastal town of Royan, where limited materials led him back to the essentials: ink, pencil, and paper. These eight sketchbooks, alongside paintings, gouaches, and photographs, capture a moment of intense introspection and reinvention. Curated by Marilyn McCully and Michael Raeburn, the exhibition showcases Picasso’s ability to transform constraint into artistic fuel, turning a time of displacement into a period of raw, urgent creativity.
