Using the work of René Magritte as his starting point, the German sculptor and photographer Thomas Demand curates a new exhibition La Carte
D’Apres Nature at Matthew
Marks Gallery’s 24th Street space. Demand concerns himself with bridging the gaps between artists who
explore the natural world, through painting, sculpture
and a remarkable body of photographs by the Italian artist Luigi
Ghirri. Ghirri could be considered a forebearer to artists like
Stephen Shore and even Laurie Simmons as he attempts to capture the
details of his surroundings through faded color combined with a
whimsical attitude.
The title of the show borrows from Magritte’s journal of the same
name. Published between 1951 and 1965, Magritte’s writings drew
connections between seemingly oppositional or unrelated ideas by
exposing shared discourse of thought. In this way, Demand brings to light the links in
the work of Tacita Dean, Rodney Graham and Becky Beasley amongst
others.
La Carte d’après Nature is on view until October 8 at the Matthew
Marks Gallery, 523 West 24 Street, New York.
