Gloria Thurn und Taxis is opening her second solo exhibition Men of Gods at The National Exemplar in New York this week. Her first, a series of 60 hand-drawn pastel portraits of recognizable friends, ranging from Warhol to Iggy Pop to Dee Dee Ramone, opened last summer at the Chelsea Hotel. With Men of Gods Thurn und Taxis continues with portraiture, this time using watercolor to create images of priests of the holy Roman Catholic Church. “I am not so crazy about painting very beautiful faces because it is very difficult to meet that beauty on the canvas. I love to paint older men because of the nose and the wrinkles. That makes it interesting. A beautiful face you can fuck up easy.”
