“Journey of a Dress” is a celebratory retrospective at LACMA, which has traveled through Asia, the Middle East and South America and is presently spread throughout 20,000 square-feet in the historic May Co. building. The exhibit features an array of work including photographs tracing the past four decades of the dress, portraits of the designer by Helmut Newton, Chuck Close and Andy Warhol, as well as a Dustin Yellin glass sculpture encasing a floating wrap dress created out of ripped images of von Furstenberg’s face. Boldly printed and mirrored walls in the back room showcase 200 mannequins—designed with the exact likeness to the designer’s cheekbones—clad in vintage and contemporary pieces. Diane von Furstenberg: Journey of a Dress is on view through April 1st, 2014 at Wilshire May Co. Building, 6767 Wilshire, Los Angeles. Text and photo Paige Silveria
