Matthew Marks’ cavernous 22nd Street gallery space is the site of three small stainless steel sculptures by artist Charles Ray. Slightly smaller than life size, the works depict men and women in different positions of vulnerability. The puzzling nudes and sleeping figure on a bench remain passive to the viewer’s instense gaze. Ray’s work often examines the human experience in abstract terms. The reflective materials in this instance detach the figures from the emotions implied by their positions. On view through January 12th 2013 at Matthew Marks, 522 West 22nd Street, New York.
