As an in-house photographer for Atlantic Records in New York during the ‘50s, Friedlander managed to capture some of America’s greatest musical legends: Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash and Louis Armstrong, to name a few. Friedlander documented the musicians in all aspects of their lives and work —recording in the studio, performing, on tour, as well as more intimate behind-the-scenes images and portraits— thereby creating a striking visual imagery of the American urban social landscape of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
