The controversial Barbican was built in the seventies in the financial district and is one of London’s most fascinating pieces of architecture. A symbol of past utopian socialist ideology, it explores the brutalist language in all its splendour with its repertoire of monolithic slabs of roughly-finished concrete, strikingly repetitive geometries and heavy masses. Its conservatory is a hidden and unexpected forgotten space where impenetrable concrete balconies have been taken over by wildlife and hanging gardens. Photo Jaja Hargreaves
