Beginnings

Beginnings by Chiara Clemente and Frederic Malle

The second installment of Chiara Clemente’s short film series “Beginnings” premiers tonight on the Sundance Channel. The second installment of her project celebrates six creative individuals based in Paris and explores their early inspirations. Objects and ephemera such as a photograph, a piece of music or a childhood trip reveal both the inner workings of the creative process and the impact of each person’s experience on their art. The dynamic films include interviews, music and archival footage. “Beginnings” is directed by Chiara Clemente and produced by Tanya Selvaratnam for Di San Luca Films.

The subjects are: actress/musician Charlotte Gainsbourg, shoe designer Christian Louboutin, photojournalist Benno Graziani, perfume editor Frederic Malle, film director and cartoonist Marjane Satrapi, and Bookseller of Shakespeare and Company, Sylvia Whitman. In fall 2010, Sundance Channel aired seven episodes of “Beginnings” about creative icons in New York, including chef Dan Barber, choreographer Carmen De Lavallade, fashion designer Carolina Herrera, artist Yoko Ono, photographer Mario Sorrenti, artist Mickalene Thomas, and designer Massimo Vignelli.
