“You know when you take a full dose of mushrooms and you start to see behind what you thought was there?” David asks. “And you’re smiling uncontrollably because it’s like you’re seeing the truth for the first time? Everything is grand and bursting with life. But to a sober person watching you, a tree is just a tree. A spoon is just a spoon. Your hand is not one with the grass. There’s some magic in these pictures, but there’s also a sobering realism. That contrast was important to me, because I think that life is all of the above. The Earth is a planet with stop signs and waterfalls and parking lots and mountaintops, with batteries and sex and jail and aurora borealis, but it could very well be just a marble in someone’s hand.”
