Glamour today comes from people who consciously take the codes and clichés of a prestigious past and bring them into their life with a celebratory, playful, and nonchalant spirit. It can be something as subtle as a gesture, a silhouette, or a hairstyle, but it always carries a feeling of nostalgia.
Echoes of old-school glamour are everywhere. There is something of Capote’s Swans in the Italian fashion icon Giovanna Engelbert; a trace of Warhol’s Factory in the American fashion editor Dara; a María Félix–style attitude in the drag artist Valentina Xunaxi; and a touch of Selena Quintanilla in the American singer Kali Uchis.
In the end, everyday clothing doesn’t interest us much. What fascinates us is how fashion accompanies women in extraordinary, fabulous, unforgettable moments of their lives.
