Chikashi Suzuki rang our doorbell 20 years ago, having just landed from Tokyo. He said that he wanted to assist his favorite photographer, Anders Edström, and to shoot for us. We gave him his first story in Purple the following week. Since then, he has become a regular contributor to Purple and our guide to the Tokyo underground scene.
When we decided to shoot our favorite looks of the season in Tokyo, we immediately thought of his photographic eye. In this story, he captured the visual spectrum of daily life in Tokyo — from a private apartment to the city’s traditional gardens and colorful, busy streets; from the studio of artist Tomoo Gokita to Isamu Noguchi’s “Heaven,” an indoor stone garden at the Sogetsu Plaza.
One of Japan’s most talented young actresses, Sakura Ando — who has worked with Kiyoshi Kurosawa and alternative filmmakers like her sister Momoko Ando — interprets our selection of the best looks from the Fall / Winter collections.
