Rakim Mayers, 24, known as A$AP Rocky, was raised in Harlem by a single mother, began rapping at eight, but took it more seriously at 13, after the death of his brother. Not an easy life, but maybe pressure for change led him to the hip-hop collective A$AP Mob and a rock star’s way of life. His music resonates with power and fearlessness. His sophisticated style — his clothes, his words, the fusion of sound and images in his music videos Wild for the Night and F**kin’ Problems — makes him the New York icon of multimedia hip-hop.
