The french photographer Dominique Nabokov went to New York when she married her composer husband Nicolas Nabokov (the cousin of Vladimir). She became part of the New York intelligentsia and began to discreetly shoot portraits of artists and writers for literary and cultural revues.

The French Nouvelle Vague filmmaker Francois Truffaut at the New York Film Festival, New York, beginning of the ’80s. He was presenting La Femme d’à Côté featuring Fanny Ardent. He was drinking his glass of milk which immediately made me think of the scene in the film Suspicion by Alfred Hitchcock ( a god for Truffaut) in which Cary Grant brings a glass of milk up a large staircase for Joan Fontaine. I think Truffaut knew that I understood the reference. Truffaut is one of my favorite filmmaker. Photo by Dominique Nabokov

The iconic French Nouvelle Vague actor Jean-Pierre Léaud at the Sarasota Film Festival, Florida, during the ’90s. Jean-Pierre Léaud was alone. We caught each other’s eye. I wasn’t sure of his reaction. He posed very naturally like Bonaparte at Saint Helene, very friendly. I was overjoyed.
