Karl Lagerfeld and I wanted to present a tribute to his long-time friend Helmut Newton, who shot about 40 portraits of him. But how to go about it? We thought of using a young man — Baptiste Giabiconi, the emerging talent Karl discovered — to represent the Newton woman. Karl had the brilliant idea of shooting Baptiste in a pair of black stiletto heels bought at Ernst de Pigalle. For the shoot the three of us journeyed to Karl’s house in Saint Tropez, then on to Venice, and then back to Paris. The challenge was to forget about Helmut Newton’s fascinating pictures, yet revive their secretive and troubling essence. Only Karl’s vision and obsession could achieve this end.
