William Eggleston’s series of fifteen images depicting the celestial Zenith is another exercise in exploring color photography from the pioneer who is responsible for legitimizing the form as a fine art. Both whimsical and timeworn, the photographs were taken from car windows and as the artist lay on his back inspecting the skies. The series is a calm escape from Eggleston’s more accustomed strong saturation and loudness of color. Coinciding with the exhibition is the issue of William Eggleston: At Zenith, the images of which were previously released in a limited edition of 20 in 1979. At Zenith is on view through February 20th at Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles. Photo Paige Silveria
