Olafur Eliasson’s new exhibition revisits his Icelandic landscape photographs displayed in powerful grids throughout the downstairs gallery of Tanya Bonakdar. The images explore the interior and exterior boundaries of the earth while the repetitive nature of the grid format brings order to the unpredictable terrain. Upstairs, Eliasson presents Your disappearing garden, a room sized obsidian rock installation recalling desolate volcano landscapes. The contemplative room feels like a futuristic and aggressive version of Walter de Maria’s seminal installation the Earth Room. Volcanoes and Shelters is on view through December 22nd 2012 at Tanya Bonakdar, 521 West 24th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
