“Oh My God You Guys”, an exhibition by Torbjørn Rødland at the Consortium Museum, curated by Eric Troncy.
The two photographs that begin and end the exhibition of Torbjørn Rødland at the Consortium Museum respectively depict a baby and an elderly man. The exhibition is designed as a journey leading from one to the other, that is, from childhood to old age. Thus, the project is highly narrative: an approach to the exhibition that is not customary for Rødland.
The exhibition mainly focuses on Rødland’s photographs that stage two antithetical characters. The artist frequently resorts to this “disruptive casting” to emphasize the strangeness of the scenes in his photographs. The “scenario” conceived by the curator for this exhibition (whose title, chosen jointly with the artist, is “Oh My God You Guys”) is a journey into sophisticated and troubled human relationships that lead from dawn to dusk of life.
The exhibition unfolds over a course of eight rooms: each stages characters of increasing age (following the baby are children, then teenagers, adults, and the elderly), producing a grand fresco that keeps in mind the historic exhibition by Edward Steichen, “Family of Man”, at MoMA in 1955.
On view from October 27th 2023 to March 31st 2024 at the Consortium Museum, Dijon, France.
