In Nigel Cooke’s latest solo show with Andrea Rosen Gallery viewers encounter large scale abstract paintings which on closer inspection reveal surreal imagery underneath the undulanting brush strokes. Cooke’s works intend to blur lines between abstraction and figurative painting. He upends the conventions of narrative painting by sweeping away his content through brush and color. Cooke’s garish works revel in anxiety and uncertainty designed to confuse viewers and draw them into the work. On view through May 12th 2012 at Andrea Rosen Gallery, 525 West 24th Street, New York.
