Jamie Shovlin‘s latest solo show at Haunch of Venison‘s Bond Street gallery is based around the cover designs of the Fontana Modern Masters series. Published between 1970-95 on eminent writers, scientists and philosophers, the exhibition represents titles that were scheduled for publication, but for unknown reasons did not appear. Shovlin invented a system that allowed him to generate designs, constructing a formula based on the idea that the cover artwork might reflect attributes of the subject such as number of lines in the encyclopaedia, number of books cited in the bibliography and premium for Nobel Prize winners. The total score of each Master allowed Shovlin to generate designs of the missing publications. Photo and text Aurora Aspen
