Swedish-born visual artist Ilja Karilampi‘s work is distinctly urban in context. Constructing his own logotypes, soundtracks and installations, Karilampi’s contemporary urban aesthetic relates to the the relationship between the phenomena of pop culture (mainstream to sub-culture) and the masses. His newest solo exhibition Big Bird is now presented at the Wilkinson Gallery in London. His previous work tends to blur reality and fiction. With The Chief Architect of Gangsta Rap (2009) Karilampi tells the story of rapper Dr. Dre’s past as part of the funk group World Class Wreckin’ Cru. In 2013 he presented Hendrix Incident at the Frieze Art Fair, a documentary video inspired by Jimi Hendrix‘s infamous visit to Gothenburg in 1968 where he defaced a hotel room. To coincide with the opening of Karilampi’s new exhibition Big Bird on view until February 23rd at the Wilkinson Gallery, Purple TV presents an exclusive month long viewing of Hendrix Incident (2013).
