Glenn Ligon’s first solo exhibition with Luhring Augustine Gallery features his renowned text-based neons. The show follows up Ligon’s recent mid-career retrospective at the Whitney Museum of New York. The small to medium format works build upon the modern and contemporary history of neon with noted references to Bruce Nauman. Ligon’s new rendition of his famed America neon reveals the artist’s continued interest in repurposing existing imagery and text in a way that feels especially timely and fresh. Neon is on view through December 8th 2012 at Luhring Augustine, 531 West 24th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
