Filmmaker Alexandra Cabral and musician Staz Lindes meet in Paris to discuss style, Southern California and the power of music

Staz, who also is the longtime muse of Hedi Slimane, wears glam rock jumpsuits designed by Zoe Bleu’s label KaKa Couture.

When did you first come to music?
My mom has it written down in her baby diary for me that I was dancing to Hendrix while I was still in diapers, but I’m sure it goes back further than that.

What does music bring to your life?
Music gives me a purpose. I know who I am when I’m playing live. It’s like thawing out in the sun.

When do you seek music?
When I haven’t been feeling like myself.

How important do you think style is to your music?
I love colors. I love expression. It all ties together.

Where does the name The Paranoyds come from?
I found a vintage paranoia pin at a flea market in NYC around the same time, 2014, that said, “The paranoids are after me!”

We always seem to talk about your mom and her stories when we’re together. She was at the center of Swinging London. How does her style and sensibility come through in you?
She was always independent, pushed individuality and having a strong sense of self, and had such amazing, strong, stylish women around me growing up. She admired my freedom in my style and encouraged it. Also, to NEVER care about pleasing men.

Do you share a lot of clothes with her?
I’m still getting new pieces here and there. I’ve cherished an Ossie Clark jacket ever since she gave it to me. I’m too afraid to wear it.
I’ve got a great Elvis shirt from her I wear the most.

I wouldn’t say you seem as interested in fashion as much as you’re into style. Who do you look to? What do you draw inspiration from?
That is very true. I’ve never been able to play the fashion game very well, just love style, clothes, expression, personality. I love how old folks dress. The older women in Paris are the ones to watch. They are our teachers. Once all that original style is gone, it’s gone. I love how old men dress too. They haven’t changed from when they were our age, so that’s the original style right there. I love anyone who chooses color and life.

Staz’s band 2m8o will release their second album “Popcorn Ceilings” across all platforms on March 13th! New Paranoyds album is on the horizon for 2026 as well.
