“BREYER P-ORRIDGE: We Are But One” is the first major posthumous exhibition of the works of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, the transgressive visual artist, writer, occultist, and one of the founding members of the experimental bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. The exhibition is an intimate look at the project Pandrogyne, created by Genesis P-Orridge and h/er partner Lady Jaye in 2003. The exhibition includes a collection of previously unpublished photographs, Polaroids, visual-poetry drawings, as well as mixed-media collages inspired by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin’s cut-up technique.
Pandrogyne is an extensive two-decades-long documentation of the couple’s unorthodox love, manifested in their desire to physically morph into each other through body-modification surgeries and cosmetic procedures. Reflective of the philosophical ideas present throughout P-Orridge’s work, the project proposes a dismantling of the binary, divided nature of the individual self through a deliberate crafting of one’s own identity and the liberation of pure consciousness. Over the course of the project, the couple became known as a single entity: Breyer Genesis P-Orridge. Ultimately, the exhibition explores the human desire to transcend the confines of the physical body and to live with what P-Orridge called sacred intent.
The exhibition is on view at Pioneer Works’ temporary location at Red Hook Labs.
