With this new solo show artist Ashley Bickerton (1959, Barbados, West Indies) pays his homage to De Kooning’s women. In between a typical cartoony irony and pure painting, this show is an emotional exercise where he uses the admixture of the three mediums of photography, sculpture and painting – where painting remains in fact the center of interest of the artist’s investigation. He gives life to a gallery of female characters staring at the spectator in different kind of smiles, but all intentionally formulated in an identical confrontational passport style manner, while the color makes the big difference, in terms of impact, and the variation is matter of details. On view through July 27th. Photo and text Marta Galli
