L’âge d’or is the first solo exhibition by Algerian-French artist Adel Abdessemed at Mathaf. The exhibition includes major creations as well as newly commissioned works produced in Doha. Pulling from multiple sources —personal, social, historical, and political — Abdessemed’s images and artistic vocabulary is in the same breath flourishing and abrupt, sensitive and essential. A controversial body of work that continuously addresses the latent effects of globalized society on the individual, often inspired by his personal condition. As an artist, he thrives at revealing materials, exploring proximity between conventions and displacement. Adel Abdessemed’s work has confronted the theme of exile since he left Algiers during the civil war of the 1990’s. L’âge d’or is on view until January 5th 2014 at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Education City, Al Huqoul St, Doha, Qatar. Photo Kenneth Taasan
